Malaysia has taken a firm decision to export about 3,000 tonnes of unusable, contaminated ‘recyclable’ garbage back to the countries from whence they came as the
country’s environment ministry turns up resistance against waste imports. Following on China’s initiatives in placing restrictions on the imports of recyclable garbage, Malaysia has been experiencing a dramatic increase in businesses illegally involved in recycling operations. This has resulted in huge quantities of what has been described as ‘poorly sorted garbage’ entering its seaports. Malaysia has since become, by one description, ‘the world’s leading importer of waste plastic’. According to the reports, Malaysia’s illegal recyclers source waste materials overseas. The remnants or waste from their production process and are disposed of by burning or illegal dumping, thus creating dangerous environmental hazards. Over the past year, more than 150 illegal recycling facilities have been shut down. Malaysia plans to ship 60 containers full of contaminated waste plastic back to several countries including Canada, Australia, the UK and the US.
