A $450 million MSC1 port investment; A $450 million MSC1 port investment; pier expansion at Celebration Key; and an historic single-day passenger record at  Nassau Cruise Port (NCP) signify positive port trends for The Bahamas in 2026. Substantial port investments and increased visitor arrivals indicate continued growth in the development of maritime resources and a sustained popularity of the destination. These markers reflect investor commitment to The Bahamas’ tourism product.

Major investmentAt a press conference at the beginning of 2026, Bahamian Prime Minister Philip Davis announced that MSC would be investing $450 million to construct a new cruise ship pier complex in Freeport, Grand Bahama. The development plans included a new berthing area as well as new infrastructure to accommodate visitors and commerce. Upgrades to Freeport Harbour and its retail village area were also listed as part of the redevelopment plan.“The project is designed as a multi-user facility, supporting operational flexibility and positioning Grand Bahama to capture greater cruise activity, higher passenger volumes and wider economic spillover into transportation, hospitality, culture, and small business,” the Prime Minister said. The multi-faceted development will feature amenities including new cruise ship berths; a welcome plaza; transportation staging; retail shops; food and beverage outlets; and entertainment areas. As the Prime Minister noted, Freeport Container Port, a Hutchison Port operation, is one of several of the company’s holdings across multiple countries that MSC, along with a partner, is in ongoing negotiations to acquire. In this regard, he expressed “high hopes” for Grand Bahama’s role in the maritime industry because of the investment. Grand Bahama could become a “... long-term logistics platform, integrated into international shipping networks, and capable of supporting sustained industrial and economic growth.”Celebration keyIn June, Carnival Corporation announced the completion of its pier expansion at Celebration Key and its waterpark and cruise terminal on Grand Bahama. The facility can now accommodate up to four cruise ships and more than 13,000 visitors on any given day.“Finishing the pier extension ahead of schedule gives us a real jump on meeting the extraordinary demand we’re seeing and allows us to bring even more guests to this unique Bahamian paradise sooner than expected,” said Carnival Corporation CEO Josh Weinstein in a press statement. Weinstein referred to Celebration Key as “... one of the centrepieces of our Paradise Collection.”The news from Carnival came on the heels of a successful first year for the port, which opened with two berths in July 2025. Since its opening, Celebration Key has welcomed more than 2.5 million guests. The expansion, with a capacity to host 700,000 more guests annually, will facilitate about 200 additional ship calls.“Celebration Key’s expansion reflects continued confidence in Grand Bahama and in The Bahamas as a leading tourism destination,” said Tourism Minister Glenys Hanna Martin. “Our priority is to ensure that investments of this scale create meaningful opportunities for Bahamian businesses; expand employment; and deliver lasting economic benefits to our people.”"The Key" is expected to do just that. An impact study by the think tank Tourism Economics indicates that the continuing work on the project could create hundreds of jobs and generate billions of dollars in revenue throughout the next 20 years. The study projected the creation of more than 2,500 direct jobs in the local economy, in addition to $3.2 billion in incremental government revenue and $9.7 billion in incremental GDP impact.Carnival Corporation invested an initial $600 million in developing Celebration Key in Grand Bahama last year. The monumental development signalled a turning of the tide in the economic slump left in the wake of a series of devastating hurricanes.

Historic arrival numbersNCP celebrated another historic single-day passenger record in June, securing its reputation as one of the Caribbean’s most popular ports of call. A little over a year after welcoming 30,538 guests on a single day, NCP smashed that record by more than 3,000 visitors arriving on June 8, 2026. Six cruise ships delivered 33,254 guests to Nassau’s shores on that historic day.“This is a proud and meaningful achievement for Nassau Cruise Port and for The Bahamas,” said Mike Maura Jr., CEO & Director of NCP, in a subsequent press statement.“The 33,000-passenger mark was an important benchmark for us. And reaching 33,254 guests in a single day reflects the strength of Nassau as a cruise destination; the confidence of our cruise line partners; and the dedication of the teams and stakeholders who support the visitor experience here. We share this accomplishment with the many tour operators, artisans, retailers, transportation providers, entertainers, downtown businesses, and tourism partners who work tirelessly to welcome our guests and introduce them to what makes The Bahamas so special.”That single-day passenger record is one of multiple achievements and accomplishments for the recently redeveloped port. NCP completed a marine expansion last November (2025) that allows simultaneous accommodation of six mega yachts. Meanwhile, the port (the world’s largest transit cruise port) has been nominated for the title of Caribbean’s Leading Cruise Port in the 2026 World Travel Awards. The impressive numbers are part of an upward trend since 2024. The 6.1 million passengers and 1,600 cruise calls at the port in 2025 represented a significant record. “Our performance reflects the strength of our partnerships and the continued appeal of Nassau as a premier cruise destination,” Mike Maura stated.

New dry dockThe Grand Bahama Shipyard announced the conclusion of a successful 2026 cruise repair season in June. The company completed repair and maintenance projects for 28 vessels, producing notable economic benefits for Grand Bahama, a leading maritime services hub.GB Shipyard CEO Chris Earl credited the commitment and dedication of the company’s workforce for the success of the season, which runs from November through May.“The combination of a demanding repair schedule and the integration of new dry dock infrastructure made this one of the busiest periods we have experienced in recent years,” said Earl in a press statement. “Meeting customer deadlines while maintaining our safety and quality standards required extraordinary effort and commitment from our entire workforce. I am pleased to report that our Bahamian hires during this time increased by 24% and our utilisation of local subcontractors increased by 65%.”The recently commissioned floating dry dock, East End, was used during the repair season, making the shipyard a two-dock operation. The new dock is part of a $600 million redevelopment programme which includes plans to expand to three docks.“The first docking following a significant investment in a new facility represents the efforts, years of hard work and determination of an entire team. Docking and delivering ss Carnival Elation on time is a reflection of that commitment and serves notice of Grand Bahama Shipyard’s potential to be the world’s leading cruise ship repair facility in the coming years,” Earl said. The East End dock was constructed by CSSC Qingdao Beihai Shipbuilding in China. It is about 357 metres in length, with a beam of about 70 metres, and can lift vessels of up to 93,500 tons.Carnival Corporation, Royal Caribbean Group and MSC Cruises operate the GB Shipyard as a joint venture.
