The world’s largest LNG-powered containerships entered global trade when the CMA CGM Group launched its first new vessel, the 23,000 teu Jacques Saadé.
The first in a series of nine liquefied natural gas (LNG) powered containerships that CMA CGM will put into its fleet, beginning in 2020, was launched at the Shanghai Jiangnan-Changxing Shipyard, on September 25.
The new ships will feature improved environmental performance. Hull design has been streamlined with the bulb seamlessly flowing into the hull profile. The bow, propeller and rudder blade have been given new lines. Technological innovations include an upgraded display and enhanced maps; a path prediction system; a smart eye system giving an aerial perspective of the ship’s surroundings; and more precise information on the ship’s performance, distance from the wharf and transverse speeds. The Jacques Saadé will have a system to automatically manage ventilation for the reefer containers aboard.
